Outperforming the Markets, and the Making of Hunters!

This year’s CVCA Annual Conference theme is about “Outperforming the Markets.” And as you will notice, the line-up of speakers we pulled together are doing just that, outperforming the markets.

The team at iNovia Capital is proud to be a part of this annual gathering of the most important venture capitalists and private equity managers in the country, and abroad. The CVCA 2012 Conference is being held right in Montréal from May 23 to 25.

This annual conference is the premiere gathering for relationship-building and insight into the current state of Canada’s venture capital and private equity industry. And as Co-Chair of this year’s event, I’m proud to inform you that we are already almost sold-out (95%). With over 600 limited partners, fund managers, and industry influencers from across Canada, the U.S. and around the world in attendance, the CVCA Annual Conference is one of the largest gatherings of the private capital industry in North America.

Taking a statement from our friends and CVCA sponsor FMC Law: “The world has changed—major equity markets have traded sideways with growing volatility through the past several years, and fixed income investments are near zero real returns. The traditional model is broken as investors rethink the risk/reward equation and look for alternatives.”

Private equity and venture capital can provide exactly what investors are looking for today: strong returns and companies that will take a leadership position in an increasingly competitive global economy. This is the opportunity to create new companies and transform existing ones. Active management by highly skilled private investors is the secret sauce. These investors jump right into their portfolio companies, working alongside management to truly transform these businesses. How do they do it? The 2012 CVCA Annual Conference will show you!

I’m also excited about the fact that we are innovating this year, enabling all attendees with tools to better access and interact with each other as well as with moderators and speakers, by providing a deep-social media enabled CVCA Application, done in collaboration with our Platinum Sponsor, Research in Motion, and with QuickMobile, we will be delivering a unique mobile experience to our conference attendees.

All registered 2012 conference attendees will receive a complimentary BlackBerry PlayBook. The PlayBooks will have the newest OS 2.0, be wi-fi enabled and pre-loaded with the new CVCA conference mobile application. The CVCA conference mobile App will be the only source of conference materials including the detailed agenda, speakers’ bios, master attendee list, sponsors and partners. The app will make connecting with other attendees and speakers easy!

The program will have equal emphasis on venture and private equity issues. The conference offers plenty of networking opportunities, beginning with a welcome cocktail event on Wednesday evening, as well as a Networking Lounge throughout the conference to meet up with your industry colleagues.

Thursday’s program focuses on success stories, deep experience sharing and some drilling into the challenges in addressing the “Making and the Building” of what we call “Hunters.” Many of our entrepreneurs have demonstrated that Canadians can provide the best technology in the world and provide a game changer advantage in some sub-markets.

The number of acquisitions of Canadian Tech Companies by Americans and Europeans over the years supports two facts: we have exceptional creativity skills and we have become experts in dressing the bride with the sexiest outfits.  From being the best in the world in some sub-markets to becoming world-dominant size wise in a market, a different strategy that involves a new set of challenges (and skills) is required. Michel Brûlé, President, Investissement M&M will deliver a keynote on the “Making of Hunters.”

The day will conclude with a Gala dinner featuring CVCA’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award presentation, followed by our popular scotch-tasting event.  The conference closes on Friday after a country spotlight featuring China and networking lunch.

I hope the message above was clear. Don’t miss out on what is expected to be our best event yet!
